Abstract:

Using innovations from pressurized metered dose and dry powder inhalers, nebulizer and other water-based nasal and pulmonary delivery technologies as a source of ideas, a range of applications, which extend beyond respiratory drug delivery are envisioned. Some, for example, the development of “smart inhalers” seems almost inevitable in the near term, while others, such as the development of spray-on transdermal patches or inhaler-motivated auto injectors seem more far-fetched. This paper is an attempt to envision where inhaler technology could take manufacturers, and those who develop supporting technologies in the future, and look into what we can learn from other medical device and related sectors.
