Abstract:

The Alberta Idealized Child Throat (AICT) has previously been shown to mimic average in vitro deposition in nine realistic replicas of the oral extrathoracic airways of children aged 6 to 14 years. Here we examine the ability of the AICT to mimic in vivo mouth-throat deposition with two inhalers, including a metered dose inhaler (QVAR®) and a dry powder inhaler (Turbuhaler®), for which in vivo data has been published by others. Good agreement is found between average extrathoracic deposition in the AICT and that reported in vivo. The potential of capturing pediatric intersubject variability in deposition by isotropic scaling of the AICT is also briefly explored.
