Abstract:
This paper describes how the complex airflow and powder dynamics of a novel high dose, dry powder inhaler (DPI) were rapidly investigated using a range of design and development tools (computational fluid dynamics (CFD), high-speed video, empirical/mathematical modeling, rapid prototyping and testing). By combining the findings and observations from the use of these tools, development timescales were considerably shortened. This was achieved despite the airflow being more complex than CFD analysis alone could model, due to: (1) the high powder content within the airflow; and (2) moving elements interacting with and changing the airflow path at high speeds. The resulting device is simple, robust and capable of being tailored to deliver a range of different, high mass (>200 mg) dry powder formulations.
