The Aerosol Research Laboratory of Alberta (ARLA) is within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta and is directed by Professor Warren Finlay. ARLA has published more than 100 highly respected peer-reviewed journal publications. Its primary research is aimed at exploring, predicting and controlling the behavior of inhaled pharmaceutical aerosols using a mix of sophisticated experimental, theoretical and numerical methods that involve aerosol mechanics, fluid mechanics, transport phenomena, and interfacial science.

Products and Services

ARLA has a large suite of aerosol measurement methods, many of which have been pioneered by ARLA, that it uses to aid companies in the development and testing of inhaled aerosol products. In addition, ARLA and its commercial partners are continually developing various patented or proprietary technologies that push the frontiers of respiratory drug delivery. ARLA also maintains the on-line aerosol deposition calculator which is a free tool that allows prediction of mouth-throat and lung deposition with inhaled pharmaceutical aerosols based on our recent research in this area.
