Abstract:
Since their introduction in the 1950s, ultrasonic nebulizers and acoustic waves have played varying roles in inhalation drug delivery, achieving mixed success. However, with recent scientific and technological advancements, new possibilities are emerging. In this report, we present a new approach to acoustic wave nebulization that addresses key challenges in respiratory drug delivery. We demonstrate efficient acoustic energy transfer to a replaceable component, which can isolate aerosol formation from the main acoustic transducer and reduces the cleaning requirements. Additionally, the method is validated for aerosolizing different biological materials while preserving their structural integrity. Leveraging the sensing capabilities of acoustic waves, we also introduce innovative strategies for breath and formulation detection sensors, aimed at improving data reliability and enhancing clinical outcomes.
