Abstract:
Pressurized metered dose inhalers (pMDIs) are under increasing scrutiny due to the environmental impact of the hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) propellants. Given the current tightening of the environmental regulations governing these propellants, propellant manufacturers have been working hard to enable access to alternative sustainable options. Development of Zephex® 152a over the past decade should allow the industry to become future fit and reduce the global warming potential (GWP) of current propellants by at least 90%. Ensuring patient safety and providing technical support with formulation, flammability handling and the subsequent manufacturing controls through partnerships with other industry experts will assist the industry with the transition. This paper summarizes the status of HFA-152 propellant development and the expected global impact of environmental regulations on medical propellant supply moving forward.
