Abstract:

The pharmaceutical industry has experienced a transformation over the last decade, driven by diverse economic and societal factors focused on overall cost reduction and development timeline compression. Scientific and technological advances have enabled the successful implementation of continuous processing to address these needs, with strong support from regulatory agencies pushing for an increased manufacturing process knowledge and control.

Continuous processing is a reality for drug substance synthesis, solid oral dosage forms manufacturing, and even biologics. Herein, leveraging from the lessons learned during the implementation of continuous processing for oral products, the authors reflect on the potential to shift from the current batch paradigm to continuous manufacturing for capsule-based dry powder inhalation products as well as prospective future areas of research.
