Economic Burden of Respiratory Disease in India

Abstract:
India has a disproportionately high burden of chronic respiratory diseases. The economic impact is due to a combination of medical costs as well as other consequences such as days off work and caregiver’s time. Direct and indirect costs have recently been estimated for asthma treatment in a private healthcare facility in South India, where the annual cost of asthma treatment was calculated to be INR 18,737. This study also highlighted that improving asthma control decreased the direct costs by reducing hospitalizations. The increasing contribution of respiratory diseases to the overall disease burden across India, especially in the less developed economic states, emphasizes the need for focused policy interventions to address these issues.
