Achieving Deposition Equivalence: The State of the Art

Abstract:

Five opinion leaders offer their views and lead a discussion of how best to achieve an average (target) and range of total lung dose (TLD) for a patient population. The discussion centers on the practical and theoretical basis surrounding the prediction of the mean and variance of TLD, from multi-dose aerosol inhalers of different designs. The authors challenge the oft-quoted desire to maintain the dose and aerodynamic size distribution irrespective of a subject’s inspiratory flow profile. Results of realistic testing, including aerosol drug sampling through different mouth throat models, according to different protocols are reviewed, alongside USP’s recent introduction of alternative induction ports for aerosol sampling.
