Respiratory Acoustics: An Objective Assessment of Inhaler Use in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Costello RW, Reilly RB.

RDD Europe 2017. Volume 1, 2017: 53-64.

Abstract:

The Inhaler Compliance AssessmentTM (INCA) technology consists of an automated system that identifies how effectively a patient uses their inhaler. Analysis of the acoustics of inhalation identify how the inhaler has been used, while patterns of inhaler use provide personalized guides to patients and clinicians to master inhaler technique and promote sustained inhaler adherence.

The INCA system has been validated in vitro by demonstrating the relationship of the acoustic features of inhalation and objectively measured inhalation flow rates and in vivo by analysis of longitudinally collected data from patients. This article outlines the assessment of adherence in a cohort of 244 patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
