Abstract:
As most liposome components share similarity to the lipids and surfactants naturally present in the human lung, it is expected that inhaled liposomal products would be safe as long as the active ingredient does not cause toxicity. Advantages of liposomal encapsulation include the potential to modulate and enhance the profile of the encapsulated drug, increase the drug dose per inhalation, especially for poorly soluble drugs, mask the taste, reduce the irritation that can occur with some inhaled drugs (e.g., unencapsulated antibiotics), and achieve cellular targeting. This article describes some of the key advances with inhaled liposomal therapeutics as a number of them are now reaching advanced stages of clinical development.
