RDD Europe 2011
RDD Europe 2011 was held at the Dorint Hotel Convention Center in Berlin, Germany. RDD Europe 2011 attracted a record attendance of 465 participants including 40% who had previously not attended our conference focused on the development of pulmonary and nasal pharmaceutical products.
RDD Online and Aptar Pharma co-hosted delegates primarily from Europe (70%) and North America (22%) but with a healthy showing from emerging markets in Asia, the Middle East and Australia.
Professor Adnan Custovic, Head of the Respiratory Research Group at the University of Manchester energetically delivered the plenary lecture on the influence of genetics and the environment on rational asthma therapy. His enthusiasm carried over into innovative science and clinical presentations by more than 20 other outstanding speakers whose expertise ranged from drug development challenges, science in product development, and advanced imaging. Professor Ian Hall from the University of Nottingham chaired a lively discussion panel related to LABA and LABA/ICS postmarket trial design from a US and European regulatory perspective.
In conjunction with the International Pharmaceutical Aerosol Consortium on Regulation and Science (IPAC-RS), RDD Europe 2011 provided an in-depth review of the utility of efficient data analysis in product quality assessment. The coordinated IPAC-RS Satellite Conference included focused presentations by representatives of regulatory agencies, pharmacopeias and industry followed by interactive discussions on technical and statistical aspects of EDA and AIM.
RDD Europe 2011 provided an excellent opportunity for scientific and commercial networking during the meeting’s signature Scientific Poster and Technology Exhibition. Companies, universities and others presented 65 scientific posters covering topics including propellants and pMDI hardware, powder and liquid-based inhaler designs, in vitro and in vivo product test methods, Quality by Design and computational fluid dynamics implementation strategies. New methods to assess and deliver small molecules and systemically active peptides were also described. Selected contributions were shared with the entire audience during an interactive session - Posters on the Podium.
The Technology Exhibition brought together representatives of the world’s pharmaceutical companies active in the nasal and pulmonary areas with their suppliers, service providers and regulators in a relaxed atmosphere that facilitated easy communication.
Twelve companies provided in-depth descriptions of their products and services during Workshop sessions which allowed the delegates to customize their conference experience to meet their unique needs. Workshop topics ranged from analytical testing to specialized filling techniques related to inhalation products. Several workshops featured hands-on demonstrations of various specialized equipment and techniques and enabled close Q&A interaction between the presenters and the attendees.
Peer reviewed papers associated with each speaker's presentation, as well as extended poster abstracts are available electronically and hard copies of the proceedings can be purchased on RDD Online. Also available are links to educational presentations, job postings and a calendar of events relevant to the aerosol scientist or manager.
The organizers thank the presenters, exhibitors, sponsors and all those in attendance who make the annual Respiratory Drug Delivery series a success.
A special thanks to the sponsors of RDD Europe 2011
